Tom Beachy Scholarship Award

Thomas Leonard Beachy was born in Niagara Falls, NY in 1934. Tom was a graduate from LaSalle High School, served in the Army National guard from 1958-1964, and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Buffalo State in Industrial Arts. He spent his career as a driver education teacher, industrial arts teacher, football and baseball coach and work experience coordinator at Lewiston-Porter High School for 34 years.

Tom was dedicated to his community in many ways. Upon retirement from teaching, he served as Town of Porter Councilman and Supervisor.  He worked for the Niagara County Sheriff Department as Traffic Safety Educator and taught summer school driver education, Driver Education certification, Driver Improvement, Defensive Driving, and classes for DWI offenses. Tom is past chairman of New York State Driver Safety Education Association of Western New York. He was the Region 8 Vice-President of the New York State Association of the Traffic Safety Boards for 14 years. Tom was involved with Niagara County Veterans Court as a mentor and a founding member of the committee to establish this program in Niagara County. He volunteered at the VA hospital in Buffalo with the US TOO prostate support group. He also served on the board of the Niagara Community Action Program and was a past chairman.

He was a 50-year member of Lewiston Kiwanis Club where he was a distinguished past president and distinguished past Lieutenant Governor. In 2006, Tom was instrumental in chartering the Kiwanis Club of Niagara-Wheatfield. Tom Beachy passed away on April 17, 2021, and we lost a true community servant.

To honor Tom’s commitment to education and serving his community, the Kiwanis Club of Niagara Wheatfield Foundation has created a college scholarship program designed to assist high school seniors from Niagara County, New York.   The Tom Beachy Memorial Scholarship will be awarded based on the student’s commitment to education and community service.

The Tom Beachy Memorial Scholarship is provided by the Kiwanis Club of Niagara Wheatfield Foundation which is a service organization and public charity organized under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3). The foundation’s scholarship is awarded based on the following objectives and on a nondiscriminatory basis. The scholarship is  not taxable to the recipient if used for qualified tuition and related expenses.

The scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to enroll, or has enrolled, at an educational institution of higher learning. The purpose of this award is to financially assist a deserving student who will be pursuing a career in education and who is committed to community service.

To be considered for a scholarship, the applicant must generally:

  • Demonstrate strong academic performance or excellence
  • Demonstrate commitment to community service
  • Submit high school (or HSE) transcripts 
  • Provide recommendations from instructors and/or community leaders
  • Live in Niagara County, New York

All application materials will be reviewed by a Selection Committee.  In selecting the recipient from eligible applicants, the Selection Committee will use objective and non-discriminatory criteria. The Selection Committee will not discriminate based on race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, or religion. However, the Selection Committee may consider the accomplishments of applicants who have overcome significant obstacles, including barriers presented by their economic circumstances, physical disabilities, or membership in a minority group.

Objective criteria used by the Selection Committee to choose the recipient will  include:

  • Prior academic performance.
  • Prior community service
  • Recommendations from instructors and/or community leaders
  • An essay which provides the committee with relevant information as to the applicant’s motivation, character, ability, achievement, potential, and plans for the future.

Further, persons not eligible to receive awards are (i)  past or present directors or officers; (ii) any family members of such individuals; (iii) any person who is considered a “disqualified person” with respect to the meaning of IRC Section 4946(a).

The recipient will be notified with an award letter and funds will be paid directly to their educational institution.

IRC Section 501(c)(3) organization:

A 501(c)(3) organization is a United States corporation, trust, unincorporated association, or other type of organization exempt from federal income tax under IRS section 501(c)(3) of Title 26 of the United States Code.  Donations made to a Foundation are tax deductible for the donor.

IRC Section 4946(a):

A disqualified person is any person who is in a position to exercise substantial influence over the affairs of the Foundation.
